"This is an interesting prospecting tool that is growing every day. Where you go and how you use it are the issues. . . . The avenues that seem to be getting the greatest attention these days are LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook. Each has its value. Social Media is like any other marketing vehicle. You have to determine how you are going to use it. Once you've determined who your target market is, identify where they are. This will give you an idea of which methods to use to reach out to them. You want to go where they are.
A word of caution - if you are not really using social media yet, pick one avenue and get used to it before you try another. You don't want to do anything halfway. Learning all of the ways you can use social media will serve you better than diving in and using it partway.
