Dos and Don'ts - Don't #1

Don't #1 - Act like the person you are cold calling should know you

What do I mean? Once I received a phone call from a number I didn't recognize. When I answered, the man on the other end acted as if I should know who he was and asked if that was a good time to call. I was startled and tried to identify where I knew him from.

Fact was, I didn't know him.

That behavior didn't make me want to talk to him. It made me want to get off the phone quickly and end the discourse. In addition, it did NOT make me want to do business with him. Just the opposite. As a matter of fact, I didn't even want to hear what he had to say!

He could have had the winning lottery numbers but I didn't care! His behavior was rude, presumptious, anti-sales.

This is a prime example of who NOT to behave. It's not cute, not clever, and not a good idea.

Lesson 1 therefore, is - Be genuine, no fake or cutsey.
